Grai

Grai – Leshak (ood goblin) [English translation]

I prepared moonshine and went to a leshak.
I tied my bast shoes, not to lose them by the way.
I have a business to the leshak, no chance to solve the matter without some alcohol.
Even the snack I took with me, put my sack on my back.
I heard no girl in the world is more beautiful, that wood goblin’s daughter.
I wanted to engage her, though I possess nothing.
Wood goblin himself called me to come and visit.
I will have the most beautiful wife in the world.

I went over the fields and the mountains, swam in rivers and lakes.
Finally I reached the forest. I wish I could have some rest on the edge!
I heard a fine voice, it invited me to cool down.
I turned back – there was a girl – maybe the most beautiful in the world.

“Be well, curly boy! Why do you make so much haste, that you became dusty?
There behind the oak there is a log hut – if you wish you can take a bath,
Or you may load up – there is plenty of food,
But there is only one bed! Would you like to be my husband?”

Only crows’ croaking above my head!

That offer make my feet hurry,
Took me to the log hut, hidden behind the oak.
There I decided to stay after meal. A nice girl welcomed me.
All in silk I forgot about troubles.
My feast was not long – as the sun set down,
The fine girl disappeared, wolves howled outside the window,
And in front of me stood – oh, horror! – leshak daughter!
My blood stopped, I just died there!
Only crows’ croaking above my head!
I am barefoot – there nothing to lose!
Only crows’ croaking above my head!
